Choosing the Correct Funeral Urn

Losing a loved one is an incredibly difficult experience, and choosing the correct funeral urn to honor their memory can add an additional layer of complexity to the grieving process. With a wide range of options available, it is important to consider several factors when selecting the perfect urn.

1. Material

Funeral urns come in various materials such as wood, metal, ceramic, glass, and biodegradable options. Each material has its unique characteristics and symbolism. For example, wood urns can evoke a warm and natural feel, while metal urns may represent strength and durability. Consider the preferences and personality of your loved one when deciding on the material.

2. Size

The size of the urn depends on the amount of ashes you intend to store. Most large adult urns have a standard capacity of 200 cubic inches, which is similar to 100 fl. oz or 3,000 ml. That, however, is a very large urn, and a lot of what you find online is not that big. My mother's ashes, a medium-sized woman, fit in an urn that is slightly larger than two 1 liter water bottles (roughly 60 oz. or 1775 ml). However, if you plan to divide the remains or if it is for a child or pet, you may need a smaller size. It is crucial to ensure that the urn you choose can accommodate the entire amount of ashes. If you are unsure, please ask the funeral home if the urn you would like to order is large enough. They will be more than willing to help you.

3. Design

Funeral urns come in various designs, from traditional to contemporary, and can be customized to reflect the personality and interests of your loved one. Consider their hobbies, interests, or profession when selecting a design. For example, if they loved nature, you could choose an urn decorated with floral motifs or landscapes.

4. Personalization

Personalizing the funeral urn can provide a meaningful tribute to your loved one. Many urns can be engraved with their name, dates, or a special message. Some urns also offer the option to display a favorite photograph.

5. Budget

Funeral urns are available in a wide price range. Set a budget beforehand to help narrow down your options. Remember that an urn's price does not indicate its sentimental value. You also won't regret spending a little extra for a high-quality and unique urn.

6. Consider the Final Resting Place

Before making a decision, consider where the urn will be placed. If you plan to keep it at home, choose an urn that complements your decor. If you intend to bury the urn, ensure that it is made from biodegradable materials that will not harm the environment.

Choosing the correct funeral urn is a deeply personal decision. Take your time, consult with family members, and trust your instincts. Remember, the purpose of the urn is to honor the memory of your loved one, so choose one that brings you comfort and peace.
